Helen Bamber Foundation
On the 15 October 2013, Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) officially opened its new home in Camden London, joined by its President, Emma Thompson.
Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) is a human rights charity based in London which was founded in 2005. Its specialist team of therapists, doctors and legal experts hold an international reputation for providing therapeutic care, medical consultation, legal protection and practical support to those who have suffered the worst of man’s inhumanity – unimaginable violence through torture, human trafficking, slavery, domestic violence and other human cruelty.
Led by BDG architecture + design alongside generous contributions from over 25 companies and individuals, a new and inspirational working environment has been created, with the clients’ needs at its heart. The space comprises traditional work space with comforting consulting rooms, as well as flexible therapy space.
Clients have already commented on the space, which demonstrates the impact that design can have upon peoples’ well-being, as one client has commented “what a wonderful space it feels very welcoming, calm and bright. The space is really uplifting and full of positive energy. I love the new furniture, especially the purple sofa and green chair and I feel l very calm and at peace in this new environment. This is a wonderful space, for a wonderful organization.”
TJ Birdi, Executive Director of HBF, said “this building would not have been possible without the help of four companies who were at the heart of making it happen. Collectively they helped contribute over £300k to us in time and gifts, and the impact that will have on the work we do is immeasurable”
Emma Thompson, President of HBF, said "I [Emma] feel pretty much safe everywhere - but people who come here do not feel safe anywhere but here. Their homes are not safe, their families are not safe, their schools are not safe. Nowhere we take for granted feels safe. This place [HBF] means safety and it is an irreplaceable quality. People come here full of anxiety, and they begin to calm down and they begin to be able to feel safe. The Foundation provides that safety, a place that feels secure. From that point, people can begin again."
Gill Parker, Managing Director of BDG architecture + design, commented “The Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) is an amazing organization and it’s been a delight to work with such talented and caring people. The space has been transformed from an unloved and dilapidated state into a safe haven for HBF clients and staff. The support from the contract furniture industry has been fantastic and helped us to realise our vision for this unique space."

BDG bring life to neglected building in Clerkenwell Read more
BDG has been appointed to re-design and complete the Cat A refurbishment of a long neglected building in the heart of Clerkenwell.
The redevelopment of Brewhouse Yard failed to complete when the recession hit in 2008. Sitting half completed for the past 5 years, BDG has re-imagined the internal configuration of the building to enhance the floorspace and bring life to the lower ground floor.
The space has already been 90% pre-let and will be accommodated as a campus environment by a range of media and creative businesses all benefitting from central shared facilities.
Planning has been granted for the introduction of new lightwells to the lower ground floor and remodelling to the main entrance. Work is due to commence late 2013.
